2003
Washington
Syrah
Horse Heaven Hills in Southwest Washington is the newest appellation in Washington State. The appellation was granted in 2005 but growers have raised grapes in the region since 1972. A predictable drop in October temperatures keeps grapes on the vines a little longer than other areas, allowing full ripening and fuller-flavors in the grapes.
The 2003 vintage was one of the warmest in recent years and therefore resulted in accelerated ripening of the grapes. We picked in mid-October, at the pick of their ripeness, and at under 25° Brix to ensure moderate alcohol levels in the finished wine.
Deep purple, almost black in color, the 2003 Syrah has intense aromas of brambleberry and cassis, and an explosion of fruit in the mouth that lasts long after the last swallow.
